Clean hydrogen to EU Markets: EUSTREAM makes an important step towards the decarbonization of Slovak industry

EUSTREAM’s ambitious plan to facilitate the international transmission of clean hydrogen has been granted Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) status. This marks a pivotal moment in the company’s efforts to support the supply of clean hydrogen to European markets and accelerate the decarbonization of Slovak industry. This recognition paves the way for securing grants from national or EU sources, bringing the project significantly closer to realization.

Transmission of clean hydrogen

The project aims to repurpose one of EUSTREAM’s main transit pipelines for the transmission of clean hydrogen. With estimated investments ranging from 400 to 500 million EUR, this initiative stands as one of the largest decarbonization investments in Slovakia. It offers a unique opportunity to decarbonize key industrial operations.

“This is a project that is essential to enable the hydrogen economy in Central and Eastern Europe. It is also the largest IPCEI of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe, underscoring the strategic importance of the Slovak transmission network.”

The H2I-TR project aligns with the EU Hydrogen Strategy, which anticipates significant hydrogen production outside the EU, in regions such as Ukraine and North Africa. The new hydrogen infrastructure will facilitate the transmission of large volumes of green hydrogen between these future production areas and consumption markets within Europe.

The project is also part of the broader European initiative Hy2Infra, which encompasses 33 projects, including five small and medium-sized enterprises, from seven Member States. The European Commission’s recognition of IPCEI status for these projects includes approval of up to 6.9 billion EUR in state aid from the seven participating Member States for the third Important Project of Common European Interest in the hydrogen value chain.

IPCEI status opens up new funding opportunities and accelerates progress towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

“The successful implementation of this project will not only benefit Slovakia’s industrial sector but also contribute to the broader European goal of creating a robust hydrogen economy, fostering energy security, and reducing carbon emissions across the continent.”
